How To - Block iTunes Radio
Posted by , Last modified by Jim Giseburt on 21 July 2017 03:57 PM

iTunes Radio is an internet radio service provided by Apple. It is accessible through iTunes and features Siri integration with iOS. While the iTunes Store and Radio interfaces themselves are accessible over port 80, iTunes Radio streaming occurs over different ports and will not be blocked by the Cipafilter's Group Permissions Music/Radio blacklist.

How to Block iTunes Radio Streaming

The following domains should be blacklisted for the groups for which you want to block iTunes radio:

  • play.itunes.apple.com
  • radio-activity.itunes.apple.com
  • radio-services.itunes.apple.com
  • radio.itunes.apple.com
  • streamingaudio.itunes.apple.com

Blocking these domains will cause iTunes radio to generate an error. Please note that blocking just itunes.apple.com can prevent apps from being downloaded.

In order to block iTunes Radio streaming at the firewall, it will be necessary to either place your firewall in drop mode or create rules to explicitly block TCP traffic over ports 8000-8999 and 42000-42999 (on version 8 and above this can be entered in a single firewall rule as 8000:8999,42000:42999). The subnets 0.0.0.0/0 indicate "anywhere" when used on the Cipafilter web interface.
