How To - Block Skype
Posted by , Last modified by Jim Giseburt on 21 July 2017 03:57 PM

Skype is a popular Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and instant messaging client that facilitates live voice, video and text-based communication. Skype is a hybrid peer-to-peer and client-server service that utilizes the background processing power of the clients on which it is installed. Because of this consumption of network resources and the strain it can put on an organizations bandwidth, as well as the obvious social networking uses, it may be desireable for your organization to block access to Skype.

Blocking Skype

In order to prevent use of Skype the following domains must be added to the blacklist for any group you wish to apply the block to:

  • skype.com
  • login.live.com

You will also need to implement a firewall rule to block all TCP and UDP ports above 3000. This can be achieved either with a structured drop firewall or two rules to reject TCP and UDP traffic from 0.0.0.0/0 (anywhere) to 0.0.0.0/0 (anywhere) on ports 3000:65535.

For more information on Cipafilter firewall settings and implementing a drop mode firewall, see our Stateful Firewall page.
