How To - Block Snapchat
Posted by , Last modified by Landon Ritchie on 19 October 2017 10:22 AM

Snapchat is a popular photo messaging application that allows users to share photos, videos, text, and drawings. With Snapchat, users can set the length of time that their messages will be viewable on the recipients' devices (between 1 and 10 seconds), after which the message will be hidden and deleted from Snapchat's servers. In addition to being a popular vector for distributing self-portraits, Snapchat has been adopted by corporate advertisers as a means of reaching large audiences with targeted marketing.

Blocking Snapchat

As of version 8.4 of Cipafilter firmware, the three specific domains associated with Snapchat are already included in the Social Networking blacklist. The core issue with Snapchat is that appspot, which hosts the application, uses a wildcard certificate for *, and some versions of the Snapchat app do not use SNI, which means the Cipafilter may not be capable of differentiating that app from other appspot apps without SSL decryption enabled.

If you use other appspot apps, it may be necessary to either enable SSL decryption or enable proxy settings on the mobile device in order to fully block Snapchat. You can either enable Social Networking blacklisting or enter the following three domains in your group blacklists to disable the app:

If you are not concerned about blocking all appspot applications, you can simply add to the appropriate group blacklists.

Blocking the app by IP can also be completed by adding the following IPs to the appropriate blacklists:

  • #in-app text based messaging
  • #google hosting site
  • #all other traffic
