Authentication Client - Novell eDirectory not Working with Windows 7
Posted by , Last modified by on 04 March 2014 01:50 PM

Novell dropped the variable called NWUSERNAME in their latest client for Windows 7, Vista, and Server 2008. Because of that, the Cipafilter Authentication Client will not be able to send the username to the Cipafilter to authenticate.

Technical Support will see the following in the /data/log/cipafilter.error log:

Fri Feb 19 14:56:09 2010 5735 10.5.2.127 [proxyauth.c:414]          "Authentication failed: 500 Use "(null)" for blank username
Fri Feb 19 14:56:09 2010 5735 10.5.2.127 [proxyauth.c:414]          "Authentication failed: 500 Use "(null)" for blank username

In order to resolve this, the following will need to be entered in the Novell Login Script editor:

SET NWUSERNAME="%1"

NovellWindows7Settings

You should now be able to start the client normally and authenticate to the correct group. The user should also appear correctly in the appropriate Internet Reports.

For Novell authentication with Windows 7, it is also recommended that you enable the "Run Logon Scripts Synchronously" policy. If you enable this setting, Windows Explorer will not start until the logon scripts have finished running. This setting ensures that logon scrip processing is complete before the user starts working, but it can also delay the appearance of the desktop.

In order to enable "Run Logon Scripts Synchronously" in either Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  1. Open the Start menu and type "gpedit.msc" in the Run/Search Programs bar to launch the Local Group Policy Editor.
  2. Navigate through the following folders under Local Computer Policy: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Scripts
  3. Open "Run logon scripts synchronously" to enable the policy.

Navigating to Run Logon Scripts Synchronously
