How To - Allow Puffin Browser
Posted by , Last modified by Jim Giseburt on 21 July 2017 03:59 PM

Puffin is a "cloud accelerated" web browser intended for use with mobile devices. It is published by CloudMosa, which operates cloud servers that perform the work of loading and rendering user-requested websites. The Puffin browser establishes a secure connection directly to CloudMosa's servers rather than to the sites the user is trying to access, in essence acting like a proxy server and making it impossible to filter traffic on the basis of content.

At the time of this writing, Puffin browser is currently incompatible with the Cipafilter proxy. They use an unconventional SSL request for "*" rather than the expected single hostname, which may cause an exception that prevents the connection from continuing.

How to Make the Puffin Browser Work with a Cipafilter

In order to enable the Puffin browser to connect through the Cipafilter, you will need to enter a transparent proxy exception for the following subnet:

Transparent proxy exceptions can be added from the Advanced Configuration tab of the Content Filtering page under Internet Filtering.

Please keep in mind that the Puffin browser is essentially a proxy service, and all traffic passing through it will remain unfiltered.
