Installing a Cipafilter Virtual Machine

This document describes the process used to deploy a supplied Cipafilter OVF file to create a Cipafilter virtual machine (VM).

Please note:  You will need to aquire the Cipafilter template from your demo installation technician or a technical support technician. 

Installing a Cipafilter virtual machine on VMware

Launch the vSphere client on your local machine and select File > Deploy OVF Template.

Please note:  The words in bold below match the deployment steps for the OVF Template.

Select the path for the Cipafilter template that you downloaded and press Next.

OVF Template Details

Displays an overview of the Cipafilter template.  Press Next

Name and Location

Enter a name for the Cipafilter virtual machine and press Next.

Storage

Select the hard drive to be used as the Cipafilter boot disk.  The boot disk is 4GB in size and is used to store the Cipafilter firmware and configuration.

The data storage disk will be created later in this procedure. 

Disk Format

It is highly recommended that you Thick Provision the boot disk.  Doing so will allow for improved performance and will significantly lower the risk of corruption.

Network Mapping

The Cipafilter can be configured in either routing mode, the default for the OVF image, or bridging mode.

 

Routing Mode

 

If the Cipafilter is going to be configured in routing mode, which is the default configuration setting for the VMware image, you will need 2 NICs.  Each NIC will be on a separate network segment and the Cipafilter will route between them.  In this configuration, you could configure a small (/30) subnet between the firewall and the Cipafilter on one NIC and attach the other NIC to the internal LAN.

 

Bridging Mode

 

If the Cipafilter is going to be configured in bridging mode, you will need 2 NICs with each NIC attached to a separate vSwitch.  Each vSwitch must be on a separate network segment. Otherwise, you risk creating a bridging loop and potentially damaging hardware.  In bridging mode, you will also want to set promiscuous mode for the virtual machine port group on each vSwitch.

 

When choosing your networks, please be extremely careful.  Your destination network will be dependent upon your configuration.

Review the deployment settings and press Finish.

Adding an Additional Hard Disk

You will need to add a data storage disk to the Cipafilter virtual machine.  The size of this disk will be largely dependent upon the Cipafilter features you will be utilizing.  If you are unsure about sizing, please contact tech support. 

To add an additional hard disk to the Cipafilter, right-click on the newly created virtual machine and select Edit Settings

In the Virtual Machine Properties window, click the Add... button.

Device Type

Select Hard Disk from the menu and then click Next.

It is recommended that you chose the Create a new virtual disk option as the disk will need to be formatted before use.  Click Next.

The disk size is dependent upon the features you are utilizing.  You will not be able to expand this drive at a later time.

If you are unsure as to how much storage space you need, please contact tech support for a recommendation.

The use of thin provisioning on this drive should not cause any issues if the Cipafilter will be a fail-over device. If the virtual Cipafilter is your primary device we recommend that you use thick provisioning for increased read/write performance.

Hard Disk Provisioning

Click Next.

Advanced Options

You can chose your mount point on this screen.  Mounting this hard disk as the second SCSI device should be the default and will work for this installation.  Click Next.

Ready to Complete

Review the properties of the hard disk.  Click Finish to create the hard disk.

 

Performance Adjustments

After creating the hard disk we suggest making some adjustments to increase hard disk performance. To make these adjustments right-click on the newly created virtual machine and select Edit Settings.

On the settings window you will want to select Hard Disk 1 and ensure that the Virtual Device Node is set to SCSI (0:0) Hard disk 1.

On the settings window you will want to select Hard Disk 2 and ensure that the Virtual Device Node is set to SCSI (1:0) Hard disk 2.

After adjusting the node settings you will want to remain on the Virtual Machine Properties window and select SCSI controller 0

You will then want to select Change Type in the upper right corner of the Virtual Machine Properties window. 

The Change SCSI Controller Type window will then popup. 

For the best performance we recommend selecting VMware Paravirtual as the SCSI type.

Click OK to complete this step.

Adding an Ethernet Adapter 

To add an additional Ethernet adapter to the Cipafilter, right-click on the newly created virtual machine and select Edit Settings

In the Virtual Machine Properties window, click the Add... button.

Select Ethernet Adapter from the menu and then click Next.

If available, select VMXNET3 as the Adapter Type.  If not, select E1000.

Select the appropriate Network Connection and click Next.

Review the Ethernet adapter options and click Finish.

*Virtual Machine version 7. Tested on ESXi 5 and 5.5. Should run wherever VMv7 is supported.
