Mac OS X Server (Open Directory) - SSL Certificate Installation
Posted by Dustin Hoeppner, Last modified by Jim Giseburt on 05 June 2017 02:46 PM

Profile Manager is a feature of Apple's OS X Server which enables centralized configuration of OS X and iOS devices. Profile Manager requires the use of Open Directory or Active Directory for network account management.

It is important to note that devices must be enrolled in Profile Manager before configuration profiles will take effect. Joining a Mac to an Open Directory domain does not by itself enroll the device in Profile Manager. Device enrollment can be achieved one of several ways: manual download/installation of the necessary profiles, manual enrollment via Profile Manager's My Devices Web interface (https://osxserverhostname/mydevices), remote deployment via script or ARD, &c.

Follow the steps below to set up a Profile Manager profile with the Cipafilter's root certificate:

  1. On the OS X Server machine, launch the Server app and log in as required.

  2. In the left-hand side bar, select Profile Manager. If necessary, toggle the Profile Manager service on. A green status indicator will appear when Profile Manager is active.

  3. To enable device enrollment via the Device Enrollment Program, tick the appropriate box and follow the instructions to set up a Deployment Program account.

  4. Click Open Profile Manager near the bottom of the window. The Profile Manager Web interface will open in your Web browser.

  5. Log in using the credentials required to administer the server.

  6. Profiles can be configured for devices, groups of devices, users, or groups of users. Select the appropriate option from the left-hand side bar, then select the group/device/user you want the profile to apply to.

  7. Click the Settings tab on the right-hand side.

  8. Click Edit.

  9. Click Certificates in the left-hand side bar.

  10. Click Configure.

  11. Enter a meaningful description for the certificate.

  12. Click Add Certificate and select the root certificate downloaded from the filter's portal or Web interface.

  13. Click OK.

All previously and newly enrolled devices should receive the certificate. This can be verified via the Keychain Access utility on the end-user device.
