HOW TO - Troubleshoot and Repair Disk I/O Errors

This KB is relevant to users on versions 9.0 and above.

When you sign into a Cipafilter, you may see the Trouble Notice below. The purpose of this article is to identify the drive displaying the I/O errors.


Disk I/O errors detected in dmesg


Step 1.  To start, we will look in dmesg for any I/O errors. To do this, run the command dmesg | grep I/O making sure to capitalize the I and O.

You will see in the example below that the problem disk is sdc, which is referenced on the last line of the dmesg output.

Step 2.  Next, run the command sudo fdisk -l to see what device sdc is.

In this example, we see that sdc is a hard drive.
