Cipafilter Documentation - Web Reports

This newer Web-reporting system features an improved interface, better filtering, new data, and several other additions over the legacy system.

User interface

Most Web-reporting report pages offer the following interface features:

  • Date picker — The date picker in the top right allows one to specify the date/time range for which reporting data should be shown. The clock icon on the far right can be used to shift the end date/time so that it includes the most recent data (usually within the last 60 seconds). Please note that queries for larger ranges are generally slower and more CPU-intensive to process than those for smaller ranges.

  • Export buttons — Reporting data can be exported in PDF, HTML, CSV, and TSV format. This is useful for printing or e-mailing reports, or for incorporating Cipafilter report data into third-party applications.

  • Filter bar — The filter bar allows one to filter for or exclude by certain data points. For example, one can add a filter specifying that only results for the subnet 10.1.2.0/24 should be included in the report. To exclude results, hold Shift when clicking on the Add Filter button.

Filters of the same type are combined with a logical OR, while groups of different filter types are combined with a logical AND. For example, given Subnet filter 1.2.3.4, Subnet filter 2.3.4.5, and Domain filter example.com, results are displayed where the IP/subnet is either 1.2.3.4 or 2.3.4.5, and the domain is example.com.

The displayed report will be empty if no results were found.

Report pages

Live Status

This page displays real-time filter performance information, bandwidth utilisation, and Internet activity.

Reports

The pages under this section display overview information for select reporting data, including users, domains, and violations. Each page includes a timeline showing hits, download, and upload, and the top data points for the selected report and time range.

Searches

The pages under this section display reports for Web searches. The All report shows all recorded Web searches, the Suspicious report shows Web searches which matched the key words on the Suspicious Search Terms list, and the ESS report shows Web searches which tripped the Enhanced Safe Search feature.

InSite

The InSite™ report is a forensics-style report designed for reviewing the titles of Web pages. Only requests for which title data is available are shown.

Viruses

This report shows information about detected viruses.

Report Card

This page is similar to the legacy report card feature — it displays top and recent activity for the given selection. This is especially useful for getting a high-level overview of an individual user's activity.

Forensics

This report offers the highest level of detail — it shows all recorded Web requests, including many which are normally filtered from other reports. This is designed mainly for troubleshooting, but can also be used generally to view fine-grained user activity information.

Notes and limitations

  • The group recorded for requests subject to Permissions Scheduling is always the active (scheduled) group. There is currently no way to determine after the fact whether or not a request was subject to Permissions Scheduling.

  • There may be a slight delay (up to a minute) before reporting data is available.

  • Page-title data may not be available/accurate for pages that make heavy use of JavaScript.

  • Page-title and MIME-type data may not be available when a request was subject to the Super Whitelist.

  • Page-title, MIME-type, and URL data may not be available for HTTPS requests unless SSL Decryption was enabled.

  • Reporting data can not be retroactively updated to reflect changes to filter settings, user authentication information, or page contents. The displayed reporting data reflects what the filter recorded at the time the request was made.
