How To - Block Kik
Posted by , Last modified by Jim Giseburt on 21 July 2017 03:56 PM

Kik is a free text and picture messaging application for mobile devices that is available for all of the major phone operating systems. It utilizes a phone's data plan or wifi connection to transmit data. While nothing can be done to prevent users from accessing this service via their carrier's data plan, you can take the following steps to prevent use of the service over your network.

As of Kik version 6.8, the app primarily connects on ports 5222 and 5223 to multiple different IP addresses. The easiest method for blocking access is to create a drop firewall rule for those ports.  These ports are used for several messaging services such as Google Hangouts, iChat, Jabber and many other messaging programs. These ports are also used for Apple Push Notification service. By blocking these ports you will stop these other services from functioning as they are intended to.

1. On the Cipafilter Firewall page, create a DROP entry for all traffic outbound on TCP ports 5222 AND 5223 (pictured below).

More information on how to create firewall rules can be found in the Manual.
