Introducing Cipafilter 9.2
Posted by Jim Giseburt on 06 December 2016 10:51 AM

We are happy to announce the latest version of our device firmware, Cipafilter 9.2. With this release we have focused on bringing you more advanced support for VPN, improved network monitoring capabilities, and new features like suspicious search term management that will help you more precisely control what content your students can access.

Live Status Dashboard

Live Status Dashboard

You have a lot of demand on your network, and being able to monitor traffic in real time can go a long way toward understanding those demands. For that reason, we've developed our Live Status Dashboard, where you can easily view live information in clear and concise charts and graphs to assess network usage.

  • Live scrolling displays current information and up to the last ten minutes of network activity so you can quickly appraise the health of your network.

  • An easy to read Line graph allows you to see bandwidth control in action, so that you can see that critical traffic is prioritized at a glance.

  • Live InSite™ report feed puts user monitoring on the same page as network monitoring for an easy to understand bird's eye view.

Improvements to VPN

We’ve heard your demands for improved VPN functionality, and we’ve answered the call by developing robust features you need for VPN enabled networking.

  • We’re expanding our support for the latest iOS and Chromebook devices using L2TP/IPSec VPN. These devices are seeing more frequent use by K-12 teachers and administrators, and Cipafilter ensures this equipment can access the network from anywhere.

  • We’ve improved VPN security features with the latest standards in next-gen encryption, so there is no need to worry whether...

Anti-Spam and Email Archiving to be Retired
Posted by Jim Giseburt on 21 October 2016 11:34 AM

The Anti-Spam and Email Archiving features have long been a part of Cipafilter.  Years ago, Anti-Spam was our number two selling feature behind our superior, proprietary, context-sensitive Content Filtering.

With the advent of Google Apps for Education, now known as G Suite for Education, many of our valued Anti-Spam customers moved to Google for email services which include free anti-spam protection.  Initially, many of those same customers continued to use Cipafilter Email Archiving, because Google charged education customers for their email archiving solution, Google Vault.  In January 2015, Google began to provide Google Vault to G Suite for Education customers for free.

The number of Cipafilter customers that use our Anti-Spam and Email Archiving features has continued to decline.  As a result, it is with a very heavy heart that we announce the retirement of our Anti-Spam and Email Archiving features.

In our soon to be released Version 9.2 firmware, these features will remain fully functional, but will be moved to a Deprecated Features menu.  Effective with the release of our Version 9.6 firmware scheduled for release in December 2017, these features will be completely removed from firmware.  Support for both features will terminate at that time.

We want to thank our customers for their belief in us and our product.  As we retire Anti-Spam and Email Archiving, we will redeploy our Anti-Spam and Email Archiving development team members to our Firewall, Content Filter and Internet Reporting development teams.

We recently introduced our new Advanced Bandwidth Control, web reporting enhancements including:  the InSite report, a Report Card and exclusion filters,...

VPN compatibility with iOS 10 and macOS Sierra
Posted by David Cross on 20 September 2016 07:02 PM

Today marks the release of Apple's latest desktop operating system, macOS Sierra. Sierra joins iOS 10, released last week, in removing support for the PPTP VPN protocol, as announced by Apple Support.

Cipafilter firmware versions 9.1.0 and earlier do not support any alternative protocols suitable for end-user VPN access. As such, Cipafilter's VPN functionality is currently NOT compatible with iOS 10 and macOS Sierra.

A forthcoming release of the Cipafilter 9.1 beta firmware will introduce support for L2TP over IPsec, which is suitable for use with all major operating systems, including iOS 10, macOS Sierra, and even Chrome OS. We do not currently have a release date for this feature, but our developers are working hard to get it out as soon as possible.

In the meantime, customers who rely on PPTP VPN are advised to make alternative arrangements or simply delay upgrading their Apple devices.

If you would like to learn more about becoming a beta customer, please let us know by reaching out to

Communication is critical, prioritize VoIP traffic to ensure your IP phone conversations come through crystal clear. Advanced Bandwidth Control gives you the ability to keep your network running efficiently and your students learning without distractions.
